House Cleaning in Greystone Heights, Saskatoon
Greystone Heights carried a different name for most of its existence as paper. On a 1913 map of registered subdivisions the area appears in two pieces, called Queens Park and Queens Park Addition — platted during the pre-war land boom and then left alone for four decades.
The land was annexed between 1955 and 1959. The majority of the houses went up between 1961 and 1970 and the neighbourhood was essentially complete by 1980. It is mostly low-density single detached housing with a sizeable minority of apartment-style units, sitting in east-central Saskatoon within easy reach of the university.
What a sixties house needs now
- Original hardwood under carpet. The signature find of this vintage. Once uncovered it is thin, sixty years old, and wants controlled moisture — not a wet mop.
- Original bathroom tile and grout, usually small-format with a great deal of grout line for the square footage. There is no fast version of this job.
- Kitchens original or fully replaced. Very little in between, and original cabinetry from this era has a finish that a strong degreaser will strip.
- Later-finished basements, often seventies panelling and drop ceilings, carrying decades of accumulated dust above the tiles.
- Sixty years of tree growth on every street, and the spring seed and autumn leaf loads that come with it.
Close to the university
Greystone Heights is within a short distance of the University of Saskatchewan, and the apartment-style share of the housing reflects that. Two consequences worth knowing:
