House Cleaning in College Park, Saskatoon

Sixties and seventies homes near the university, cleaned properly.

House Cleaning in College Park, Saskatoon

College Park was annexed between 1955 and 1959 and built out with construction peaking from 1961 through to 1980 — so the housing here is overwhelmingly of the sixties and seventies. If you have ever noticed that the streets are named after Canadian universities, that is deliberate: it is the theme running through both College Park and College Park East.

Roughly two thirds of the buildings are single detached homes, with the remainder small apartment blocks and townhouses. The proximity to the university and to 8th Street means a meaningful share of the housing is rented, particularly to students.

What a 1960s or 70s Saskatoon house holds onto

Homes of this vintage sit in an awkward spot. They are old enough to have accumulated sixty years of residue, but not old enough that owners treat them as heritage properties needing special care. The result is a house that looks fine at a glance with decades of buildup in the places nobody looks.

  • Textured and popcorn ceilings. Near-universal in this period. They trap dust and cannot be wiped — they have to be vacuumed carefully with a soft brush, and cleaning them aggressively damages them permanently.
  • Original hardwood under carpet. Extremely common. Where it has been uncovered, it is usually a wax or varnish finish rather than modern polyurethane, which means water and steam mops are both destructive.
  • Wood-burning fireplaces. Standard in the era, and even light use leaves a soot film on the mantel, the surrounding wall and the ceiling above that spreads much further into the room than owners realise. It needs degreasing, not dusting.
  • Original kitchen cabinetry. Sixty years of cooking builds a genuine grease layer on cabinet doors, heaviest above and beside the stove. Degreasing original wood without stripping the finish takes the right product and a light hand.
  • Cast-iron radiators and old registers. Still in service in a number of College Park homes. Dust packs into the fins over summer and then bakes on when the heat comes up in October, so they want attention in September rather than December.

The student rental cycle

College Park runs on an academic calendar in a way most of Saskatoon does not. Leases turn over heavily at the end of April and through August, which produces two predictable waves of move-out and move-in cleaning every year.

For landlords this is the difference between a unit that re-lets immediately and one that sits empty. A proper move-out clean covers what a damage-deposit inspection actually checks: inside the oven and fridge, inside cabinets and drawers, window tracks, baseboards, light fixtures and bathroom grout. We work with several College Park landlords on repeat turnover schedules, and if you manage multiple units it is worth booking the April and August windows in advance.

Apartments and townhouses

The medium-density portion of College Park — small apartment blocks and townhouse rows — is a steady part of our work here. Unit cleaning has its own constraints: building access, limited parking, shared entries and enforced quiet hours. We handle all of that ourselves. See our apartment and condo cleaning page for how that works.

Long-term owners beside the rentals

College Park is not only rentals. A significant number of original and long-tenure owners are still here in homes they bought decades ago, often now larger than the household needs. Regular cleaning is frequently what makes staying comfortable rather than a matter of appearances.

Where more than housekeeping is needed, our non-medical senior care covers companionship, meal preparation, laundry, errands and appointment transportation — and combined households get one schedule and one invoice.

Deep clean first, then maintain

For most College Park houses we suggest starting with a full deep clean rather than going straight to a recurring schedule. There is usually a backlog — baseboards, inside appliances, the fireplace surround, light fixtures, window tracks, the basement. Once that reset is done, a bi-weekly or monthly schedule holds it easily at a much lower per-visit cost.
