House Cleaning in City Park, Saskatoon

Older homes around Kinsmen Park in one of the first areas annexed after 1906, cleaned with care.

House Cleaning in City Park, Saskatoon

City Park was one of the first areas annexed after Saskatoon's incorporation in 1906, and it was originally called Central Park. It held a golf course, and from 1903 the annual exhibition, complete with a horse racing track and grandstand. The exhibition moved south by 1910, but the outline of that old racetrack is still readable in the ground at Kinsmen Park — sixty acres in the middle of the neighbourhood.

What that history left behind is a neighbourhood of pre-war character homes ornamented with stone detail and shaded by large elms, riverfront property along Spadina Crescent, and a substantial stock of apartments and condominiums. The Alexander Residence on Spadina Crescent, built in 1912, is among the city's finest surviving examples of pre-First World War Arts and Crafts architecture.

Character homes need a different hand

A house built before 1920 is not a modern house with older fittings. It is a different construction system. Before renovating one, see our guide to lead paint and asbestos in older homes.

  • Original woodwork. Fir and oak trim, built-in cabinetry, wide baseboards, panelled doors and staircases with turned spindles. Every one of those is a dust trap with a hundred surfaces, and every one is irreplaceable. They get dry methods and gentle products, not a wet cloth and pressure.
  • Plaster walls and coved ceilings. Textured, dust-holding, and unforgiving of scrubbing.
  • Radiators. Cast-iron rads collect dust in fins that a vacuum wand cannot properly reach, and they bake it in every heating season. They need deliberate attention, usually once or twice a year rather than weekly.
  • Original hardwood, often ninety or a hundred years old and refinished as thin as it can go. Over-wetting is the fastest way to ruin it.
  • Single-pane and storm windows, where condensation and sill damage are ongoing rather than occasional.

If you own one of these houses you already know that the wrong cleaner can cost you more in a morning than a year of cleaning is worth. We would rather spend twenty minutes at the walk-through establishing what gets touched and how.

Elms, and what they drop

The large elms that make the streets what they are also produce a heavy seed drop in late spring — the papery samaras that get into everything — followed by leaf litter in autumn and a steady fine pollen load in between. Homes here need more frequent entry and window-track attention than the tree-free new suburbs, and the seasons are predictable enough to schedule around.

Condos, apartments and the river

City Park also has a large share of apartment and condominium living, particularly along and near the river. Those are a different job: smaller, more glass, more balcony, and a lot more attention to the few square feet that get used hardest. Our apartment and condo cleaning is priced for that rather than scaled down from a house rate.

City Hospital and shift work

City Hospital sits on the northern edge of Kinsmen Park. The original opened in 1909 as only the second municipal hospital in Canada; the current building opened in 1993. A meaningful number of our City Park clients work there, which means rotating shifts and a schedule that does not fit a standard Tuesday-morning rhythm.

We book around rotations rather than asking you to work around us, and for households where somebody sleeps days we work to a noise and room order agreed in advance. If you also need care at home, our care services were built with shift-work families in mind.
