House Cleaning in Nutana, Saskatoon

Character homes and riverbank condos — we clean Nutana's most unique homes with the care they deserve.

House Cleaning in Nutana, Saskatoon

Nutana is Saskatoon's oldest neighbourhood. It dates to 1883, predates the city itself, and was a separate town until amalgamation in 1906. Most of its housing stock went up in the early 1900s, which makes it one of the most rewarding and most demanding areas we clean in. If you are renovating one, read our guide to lead paint, asbestos and renovation dust in older homes first.

Character homes on tree-lined streets, original hardwood, plaster walls, clawfoot tubs, leaded glass, deep baseboards and built-in millwork — these are beautiful houses, and they punish the wrong cleaning approach far more than a new build does. A century-old finish does not recover from an abrasive pad.

Cleaning a character home properly

Nutana homes need a fundamentally different method from the newer suburbs, and it comes down to the age and irreplaceability of the materials.

  • Original hardwood. Old floors are usually finished with wax or shellac rather than modern polyurethane, and they are often too thin to refinish again. Water is the enemy. We use a barely-damp mop, never a wet one, and never a steam mop — steam drives moisture into seams and lifts old finishes.
  • Plaster walls and decorative mouldings. Plaster is more fragile than drywall, and ornate mouldings and ceiling medallions collect dust in detail work a cloth simply cannot reach. Soft brush attachments and patience, not scrubbing.
  • Original bathroom fixtures. Clawfoot tubs, hex tile floors and pedestal sinks are frequently original. Porcelain enamel from that era scratches under abrasive powders, and old grout is porous. Non-abrasive products only.
  • Radiators and heat registers. Cast-iron radiators are still in service in a lot of Nutana houses. They accumulate dust in the fins that then bakes on when the heat comes up in October. They need attention before the heating season, not during it.
  • Leaded and stained glass. Ammonia degrades the lead came and the glazing putty. It gets a gentle, ammonia-free clean or it gets left alone.

Why deep cleans matter more here

Century homes accumulate differently. Dust settles into places a newer house simply does not have — on top of door casings, in the grooves of built-in cabinetry, behind radiators, in the gaps of original hardwood, along picture rails. A standard clean maintains the surface. A deep clean is what actually addresses the buildup, and in Nutana we usually recommend one at least twice a year even for homes on a regular schedule.

Condos and infill along Broadway

Nutana is not only character homes. The Broadway Avenue corridor — the original commercial main street of the town of Nutana, and now a cultural strip of boutiques, restaurants and the community-owned Broadway Theatre — has drawn condo development and infill housing. We do a lot of condo and apartment cleaning in these buildings.

Condo work has its own constraints: elevator booking, parking limitations, quiet hours and building access rules. We handle all of that ourselves rather than making it your problem.

Listing prep in a heritage neighbourhood

Nutana properties photograph beautifully when they are clean and poorly when they are not, because the same details that make these homes desirable — woodwork, original floors, big windows — are exactly what shows dust and film in listing photos. Our realtor and listing-prep cleaning is built around getting a home camera-ready, and we work regularly with agents selling on the east-side heritage streets.

A note on respect

Owning a character home in Nutana usually means caring about it. Our team is briefed on what not to touch, what to flag rather than attempt, and when to ask. If something looks original, fragile, or uncertain, we ask you before we clean it — we would rather leave one shelf undusted than damage something that cannot be replaced.
