House Cleaning in Silverspring, Saskatoon

Northeast homes on land the University of Saskatchewan once administered, cleaned properly.

House Cleaning in Silverspring, Saskatoon

Silverspring sits in the northeast and has an origin most people here do not know: the land was administered by the University of Saskatchewan before it became a neighbourhood. It was annexed between 1955 and 1959, but nothing much happened for thirty years.

Development started in 1986 and then stalled almost immediately — the recession and the housing downturn of the late eighties put it on hold. The bulk of the neighbourhood was actually built from 1991 through to about 2000, which is why the housing stock feels consistent in a way older areas do not.

It is now home to roughly 4,900 people, overwhelmingly in low-density single detached houses, and the home ownership rate is 97.8% — among the highest in the city. Almost nobody here is renting.

What a 1990s build needs at thirty years

Houses from this decade are hitting a predictable set of maintenance and cleaning points all at once:

  • Original bathroom fixtures reaching the end. Fibreglass tub and shower surrounds from the nineties develop a fine surface roughness with age — not dirt, but a texture that grabs soap scum and then refuses to let go of it. It needs the right product and patience, not a harder scrub, which only makes the surface rougher.
  • Grout that has given up. Thirty-year-old bathroom and entry grout has usually lost its seal. It can be cleaned back a long way, but we will tell you honestly when it needs regrouting rather than take your money twice.
  • Kitchens mid-renovation cycle. A lot of Silverspring kitchens are either original or recently replaced, with little in between. Original nineties cabinetry has a finish that does not want a full-strength degreaser.
  • Carpet in bedrooms, hard floors below. The typical layout of this era, and it means two quite different cleaning methods in one house.
  • Trees that are now mature. Thirty years of growth means a real spring seed drop and autumn leaf load that the neighbourhood did not have in 1995.

Owner-occupied changes what people want

At nearly ninety-eight percent ownership, we are almost always cleaning for the people who actually own the house — and that changes the job. Owners care about the things that preserve the house, not just the things that show: hard water on fixtures, buildup behind appliances, the state of the grout, whether the hardwood is being over-wetted.

It also means recurring work rather than turnovers. Most of our Silverspring clients are on a fortnightly or weekly schedule with the same cleaner, which is both cheaper for them and better for the result — see recurring cleaning.
