Forest Grove tells you what it is from the street signs. The neighbourhood was named to an arboreal theme and its streets and roads are named after types of trees — a small piece of planning that has aged well, because the trees themselves are now fifty years old.
The land was annexed between 1955 and 1959 and development began in the 1960s, with the original boundaries running to 115th Street in the south, Forest Drive in the east and Central Avenue in the west. Most of the building happened between 1971 and 1990. In the 1980s it was extended north along Rossmo Road to meet the new Attridge Drive. As of 2011 about 5,907 people lived here, mostly in low-density single detached houses with a sizeable minority in apartments.
Mature trees are the defining cleaning factor
Fifty years of growth on streets planned around trees produces a genuinely heavier seasonal load than newer northeast neighbourhoods carry:
- Late spring seed drop. The papery samaras and seed fluff get into window tracks, door thresholds and entry mats, and they keep coming for weeks.

- Fine pollen through the growing season, which settles on high surfaces and recirculates every time the furnace fan runs.
Practically, that means window tracks and entry transitions here want attention on a schedule rather than when someone notices. The timing is predictable enough to plan around.
Twenty years of building in one neighbourhood
Because construction ran from 1971 to 1990, the housing stock spans two decades of practice and the north end is meaningfully newer than the original core:
- Seventies houses — wood-burning fireplaces with ash that travels, panelled and drop-ceilinged basements, and first-generation fibreglass tub surrounds now roughened with age and gripping soap scum.
- Eighties houses — larger, through one renovation cycle already and due a second, with mixed-era finishes and dust collecting where the eras meet.
