House Cleaning in Montgomery Place, Saskatoon

Half-acre post-war lots in a National Historic Site, cleaned with care.

House Cleaning in Montgomery Place, Saskatoon

Montgomery Place is not like anywhere else in Saskatoon, and it is worth knowing why before anyone quotes you a price based on square footage alone.

It was established in 1946 as a Veterans' Land Act community for men and women returning from the Second World War, and named after Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. Fifteen veterans and their families moved in that first year, three more followed in 1947, and veterans continued settling here until 1977. The lots were half an acre, deliberately, so that each family had an agricultural holding. The community joined the City of Saskatoon in 1955, and in 2016 it was designated a National Historic Site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

It has kept the original layout, lot sizes, setbacks, street names, green spaces and many of the recognisable original house plans. That history is the single biggest factor in what cleaning here actually involves.

Half-acre lots change everything about the entryway

A half acre is roughly eight times a typical new-suburb lot. That means long approaches, gravel and garden between the street and the door, mature trees, and in most cases a genuine yard rather than a strip of sod.

What comes inside reflects that. Entryways and mudrooms in Montgomery Place carry far more soil than the same room in a compact Evergreen or Aspen Ridge home — leaf litter and seed in autumn, garden soil through summer, and a long wet approach through spring melt. We plan a heavier entry-and-transition pass here rather than treating it as one more room.

Original post-war houses, eighty years on

Many homes retain the original plans, and post-war construction has particular characteristics:

  • Original hardwood, often under later carpet. Narrow-strip 1940s and 50s flooring that has been refinished once or twice takes a gentler approach than a modern engineered floor. Over-wetting it is the classic mistake.
  • Plaster rather than drywall. It is harder, it holds fine dust in its texture, and it does not appreciate aggressive scrubbing at corners.
  • Smaller, older bathrooms with original tile and grout that needs the time it needs rather than the time a checklist allows.
  • Basements that were finished later, sometimes several times, with the dust profile of every decade involved.
  • Mature trees everywhere, which means pollen in spring and a steady supply of fine organic dust through the growing season.

Additions and renovations

Because the original houses were modest and the lots generous, a great many have been added to over the decades. Additions mean junctions — changes in floor level, in flooring material, in ceiling height — and junctions are where dust collects and where a rushed clean shows. We walk the house first and note them rather than discovering them halfway through.

If you are in the middle of a renovation, our post-construction cleaning is the right service; drywall dust is a different job entirely and putting it into a regular clean does not work.

A community that pays attention

Montgomery Place is tight-knit and conscious of its origins, and word travels. That suits us. We would rather earn a street through one household than through a flyer, and our reputation here is worth more to us than any single booking.

It also means we treat the place with the care its designation deserves. If something in your home is original and you want it handled a particular way, tell us at the walk-through and it goes in the notes permanently — not repeated to a different crew every visit.
