House Cleaning in Lakeview, Saskatoon
Lakeview has a claim worth making properly: it was the first community in Saskatoon built around a man-made lake. Every lake neighbourhood in this city that came afterwards — Briarwood among them — is following a template Lakeview set.
The land was annexed between 1975 and 1979 and the neighbourhood was built from 1980 to 1990, with construction at its peak from 1981 to 1985. Most residents are in low-density single detached houses, with a sizeable minority in semi-detached and apartment-style units. It is a high income area, with an average family income of about $120,042.
Living beside water changes the cleaning
This part does not apply in most of the city.
- Water means more outdoor living, and more of it comes indoors. Homes facing the lake see far more traffic through back and patio doors from May to September. Entryways and the transitions between outside and in carry a much heavier load than an interior-lot house.
- Lake-facing windows show everything. The whole point of the view is the glass, and that glass collects a film of dust and moisture spotting that is invisible from inside until the light hits it at the wrong angle. Interior glass here is worth doing more often than elsewhere.
- Higher humidity close to the water, which in practice means keeping a closer eye on bathroom and basement corners than an inland house needs.
An early-eighties house at forty years
The stock here is now at a very particular age, and it shows in a consistent list:
- Second-generation renovations. Many of these houses have been updated once around the twenty-year mark and are due again. That means mixed-era finishes in one house and junctions where the eras meet — which is exactly where dust collects.
- Original hardwood or the carpet that replaced it, and often both in the same house.
- Fibreglass tub surrounds from the eighties, which develop a surface roughness with age that grips soap scum and needs the right product rather than a harder scrub.
- Wood-burning fireplaces, common in this vintage, with the fine ash that migrates well beyond the hearth.
- Forty years of tree growth, and a real seasonal load to go with it.
