Confederation Park has the most literal street naming in the city. The neighbourhood first appeared on city maps in the late 1960s, development began in the early 1970s, and almost every street is named after a prominent figure in Canadian political history — mostly prime ministers, with a few governors-general among them.
It gives the west side a neighbourhood where the addresses themselves are a history lesson, and it makes the place easy to place in time: this is early-seventies Saskatoon.
What an early-seventies house needs now
- Wood-burning fireplaces, near-standard for the era. The fine ash migrates well past the hearth and settles across that end of the room.
- Fibreglass tub surrounds from the first generation of them, now carrying a fine surface roughness that holds soap scum. It wants the right product rather than a harder scrub.
- Original hardwood under later carpet, the standard find of this vintage, thin by now and needing controlled moisture once exposed.
- Basements finished in panelling and drop ceilings, with decades of accumulated dust sitting above the tiles.
- Fifty years of tree growth, which means a real seed drop in late spring and leaf load in autumn that the neighbourhood did not have when it was new.
Renovation dust is a separate job
A neighbourhood at this age has a lot of houses mid-project, and it is worth knowing that drywall and plaster dust does not behave like household dust. It stays airborne for hours, settles again after the cleaners have gone, and putting it into a standard clean produces a house that looks worse the next morning.
