House Cleaning in Avalon, Saskatoon

Post-war homes on streets platted before the First World War, cleaned with the age of the house in mind.

House Cleaning in Avalon, Saskatoon

Avalon has a gap in its history that shows up in the houses. The land was annexed between 1910 and 1919, during the optimism that followed the city's incorporation — and then almost nothing was built on it for a generation. Home construction did not begin in earnest until after the Second World War.

So the streets were platted in one era and filled in another. Today it is a mostly residential neighbourhood in south-central Saskatoon, close enough to Broadway and 8th Street to be genuinely convenient.

Post-war houses, seventy-odd years on

The dominant stock here is the well-built, modest post-war house, and it has particular characteristics:

  • Original hardwood, often under later carpet. Extremely common in this vintage and frequently uncovered during a renovation. Once exposed it is old, thin, and wants controlled moisture rather than a wet mop.
  • Compact original bathrooms. Small-format tile with a great deal of grout line per square foot. It takes the time it takes, and no amount of scrubbing speed changes that.
  • Plaster in the older houses, drywall in the additions. Many of these homes have been added to, and the junction between the two is exactly where dust settles and where a rushed clean shows.
  • Basements finished in a later decade, sometimes more than once, carrying the dust profile of every era involved.
  • Mature trees on every street — seventy years of growth, and a real seed and leaf load twice a year.

A neighbourhood in the middle of its renovation cycle

A good proportion of Avalon houses are somewhere in a project at any given time, and that matters in a specific way: drywall and plaster dust does not behave like household dust. It stays airborne for hours, settles again after you have left, and putting it into a standard clean produces a house that looks worse the next morning.

If you have had work done, book post-construction cleaning first and start the regular schedule afterwards. Different method, different filtration, different number of passes.
