Housekeeping for Seniors in Saskatoon
There is a gap in Saskatoon that nobody serves well. Health Authority Home Care covers clinical needs. Ordinary cleaning companies come in, clean fast and leave. Neither handles the actual situation of an older person in a house that has become slightly too much - laundry down basement stairs, a fridge with expired food, floors that have not been done properly in a while.
That gap is what this service is for. It is delivered by our care staff, who hold CPR, Standard First Aid and Food Safe certification and complete a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening - not by a standard cleaning crew.
What makes it different from a normal clean
- Pace. A regular clean is optimised for speed. This is not. If your mother wants to talk about the photographs on the hall table, that is part of the visit, not an interruption to it.
- Safety before shine. Clear walkways matter more than a polished counter. We watch for trip hazards, rugs that slide, cluttered stairs, burnt-out bulbs in dim hallways, and floors left wet. Falls are the single largest risk to independent living, and most of them are preventable by a tidy house. Before the snow arrives, our winter home safety checklist is a good walk-through to do with a parent.
- Scope. Laundry including bedding, dishes, a tidy of the fridge, bins out on collection day, and the mail sorted into a pile that makes sense. A standard cleaning contract covers none of that.
- The same person. Continuity matters enormously here, particularly for anyone experiencing memory changes. You get a primary caregiver and one named backup who has also met the family.
- Someone tells you how it went. A short message to family after each visit. Not a report on your parent - just what was done, and anything you would want to know.
What we notice, and tell you about
Someone in the house every week sees changes a fortnightly phone call does not. With your parent's agreement we will mention it if we see the fridge going untouched between visits, laundry piling up in a way it did not before, mail unopened, a new bruise, or a medication organiser with missed days.
We are not diagnosing anything and we will not go behind your parent's back. But families consistently say this early warning is worth more than the cleaning.
What is not included
We want to be direct about the boundary. This service is non-medical. We do not administer or dispense medication, provide wound care, assist with bathing, dressing or toileting, or perform lifts and transfers.
If those are needed, the Saskatchewan Health Authority Home Care program is who to contact. A great many families use both - the Health Authority for clinical care, us for the many hours in between.
What it costs
From $32 per hour with a three-hour minimum visit. A recurring weekly plan of twelve hours or more brings it to about $29 per hour. Same rate as our non-medical senior care, because it is the same certified staff.
Three hours is the minimum for a practical reason rather than a commercial one: an hour is not enough to do laundry, tidy properly, and still sit down for an unhurried conversation.
Deep cleans and the heavy work
Some jobs should not be a caregiver's work alone - a full deep clean after a long stretch without one, moving furniture, or clearing a basement. For those we send the cleaning team, often on the same day as the caregiver, on one schedule and one invoice.
And when a move to assisted living or a smaller home does come, we handle move-out cleaning and listing preparation.
Starting gently
Most families begin with one visit a week. That is deliberate. A parent who has managed alone for decades does not usually welcome help arriving three times a week from a standing start, and pushing it rarely ends well.
Our in-home consultation is free and it is a conversation, not a sales visit. If what your parent actually needs is clinical care, we will tell you so and point you to the Health Authority instead.

Common questions
What is the difference between senior housekeeping and regular cleaning?
Pace, priorities and scope. A regular clean optimises for a spotless result in the shortest time. Senior housekeeping works at the client's pace, prioritises safety over shine - clear walkways, dry floors, working lights - and includes laundry, dishes and tidying that a standard clean would not.
How much does senior housekeeping cost in Saskatoon?
From $32 per hour with a three-hour minimum visit, dropping to about $29 per hour on a recurring weekly plan of twelve hours or more. That is the same rate as our non-medical senior care, because it is delivered by the same certified staff.
Is this medical care?
No. This is strictly non-medical. We do not administer medication, provide wound care, assist with bathing or toileting, or perform lifts and transfers. For those needs, contact the Saskatchewan Health Authority Home Care program - many families use both services together.
Can you help if my parent is resistant to the idea?
It is extremely common. What usually works is framing it around the house rather than the person - someone coming to help with the cleaning, not to look after them. Starting with a single weekly visit and a caregiver they choose to like does more than any amount of persuading.
