House Cleaning in River Heights, Saskatoon
River Heights took an unusually long time to fill in, and that is the most useful thing to know about cleaning here. Most of the land was annexed in the late 1950s, with the eastern third added in 1974. Development began in the very early 1960s — but by August 1967 only a small portion had actually been built, and full build-out was not finished until the early 1980s.
Twenty years of construction in one neighbourhood means the housing stock spans three decades of building practice, sometimes within a few streets of each other.
Three eras, three different jobs
- Early-sixties houses. Original hardwood commonly under later carpet, small-format bathroom tile with a lot of grout line, and kitchens that are either untouched or completely replaced.
- Seventies houses. Wood-burning fireplaces with ash that travels, panelled and drop-ceilinged basements, and the first generation of fibreglass tub surrounds — now roughened with age and gripping soap scum.
- Early-eighties houses. Larger, already through one renovation cycle and due a second, with mixed-era finishes and dust collecting at every junction where the eras meet.
Because of that spread, square footage alone is a poor guide to what a clean here takes. Two houses of identical size a block apart can be genuinely different work. We walk the house and quote what is actually in front of us.
North-end winters
From November to April the City treats streets with sand carrying about 5% potash salt and a magnesium chloride de-icer, pre-wetted on the busier routes so that it sticks to the road — and therefore to boots. The sand is abrasive and cuts carpet fibre in entry traffic lanes; the magnesium chloride is hygroscopic, so it holds moisture in the fibre and blooms white salt back to the surface after vacuuming. Entryways need neutralising through those months rather than the same pass as the rest of the floor.
